Orioles' Wigginton has suspension reduced, drops appeal

07/26/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Baltimore Orioles infielder Ty Wigginton had his three-game suspension reduced by one game, Major League Baseball announced on Monday.

Wigginton, who agreed to drop his appeal, was originally slapped with three games for his on-field argument and subsequent volatile reaction with an umpire in Thursday's game against Minnesota.

The nine-year veteran had initially appealed the ruling and was in Baltimore's starting lineup on Friday, going 1-for-4 with a triple in the club's 3-2 win over the Twins.

Wigginton's suspension began on Monday when the Orioles opened a three-game series at Toronto. He will be able to return for the finale on Wednesday.

Manager Juan Samuel and pitching Rick Kranitz were ejected, along with Wigginton, during the seventh inning of the game.

Umpire Gary Darling ruled that Wigginton missed a tag on Twins' shortstop J.J. Hardy, who was diving back to first base on an aborted stolen base attempt.

Wigginton argued briefly, but vociferously, and was thrown out of the game after it appeared he had bumped Darling chest to chest.

The veteran infielder then had to be restrained by Samuel before leaving the field.

Later in the frame, home plate umpire Bill Hohn threw Kranitz out for sarcastically clapping from the dugout after Drew Butera's single scored Hardy.

Samuel then came storming out of the dugout and was dismissed after taking his hat off, throwing it to the ground and stomping on it.

Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.

Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.

''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''

Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.
   
Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.

”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
