11/23/2007 - Anchorage, AK (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - With a chance to play for the Great Alaska Shootout title on the line, the 22nd-ranked Butler Bulldogs and the Virginia Tech Hokies clash on the hardwood at Sullivan Arena this evening in semifinal round action.
The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a solid, 79-65 victory over Michigan on Wednesday. Overall on the season Butler is 4-0, with two of those victories coming on the road against Ball State (61-45) and Evansville (60-47).
As for the Hokies, they had little trouble in their first round game, beating Eastern Washington, 69-52. It was the second victory of the year for the Hokies, who opened their season with a 69-64 win over Elon. Tonight's winner will move on to the championship and will face either Texas Tech or Gonzaga.
In regard to the all-time series between the two schools on the hardwood, this will be the first ever meeting.
The Bulldogs used a tournament record 17 three-point baskets to drive past the Michigan Wolverines in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout. The Bulldogs shot 45.5 percent from the field overall, including a scorching 53.1 percent from behind the arc. Pete Campbell led the way with 18 points, all of which came from three-point baskets. A.J. Graves added 17 points in the win, while Mike Green tallied 14 points and dished out eight assists. Matt Howard was huge off the bench, recording a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The main offensive threat on the season has been Graves, who is currently pacing the team with 19.0 ppg. The veteran guard is shooting 54.3 percent from long range. Campbell is second on the squad with 13.3 ppg, while Green is posting 11.8 ppg to go along with team-highs in rebounds (6.3 rpg) and assists (18).
For the second straight game this season the Hokies did a tremendous job defensively, as the squad held EWU to just 39.1 percent shooting from the field. Offensively, the team was led by Hank Thorns, who tallied 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. Jeff Allen added 12 points and eight boards, while A.D. Vassallo and Deron Washington tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively. On the season, Washington (14.0 ppg) and Vassallo (12.0 ppg) have been solid, but the main source of production has been Allen. The forward enters this matchup averaging team-highs with 15.5 ppg and 9.0 rpg. While the team is doing a terrific job offensively, it has been the defensive play that has the Hokies at 2-0. Thus far, opponents are averaging just 58.0 ppg, while being held to just 40.2 percent shooting from the field.
